The West African Tax Administration Forum (WATAF), in partnership with the Joint Tax Board (JTB), recently carried out a landmark field mission across Lagos, Kano, and Anambra. The aim was to help MSMEs in West Africa understand how to take advantages of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) launched in 2018, given that tax administrations might also have to reset their tax revenue collection strategies to optimise tax collections.
By engaging entrepreneurs, market leaders, artisans, traders, and state tax officials, WATAF is generating first-of-its-kind insights to help support fiscal interventions for enterprises growth in an environment of free trade. One message was clear: MSMEs want to grow — and they need tax systems that enable that growth. This research strengthens WATAF’s role in driving domestic revenue innovation and shaping smarter policies for a stronger, more integrated West Africa.
